"Beauty, as defined by society at large, seemed to be only about who was best at looking like everyone else."
- Lucy Grealy, Autobiography of a Face
Last term, we were given the theme "Gender Issues" at school. Make art. Go.
Conformity being an issue I feel strongly about, I decided to make my art about something very relevant to today's teenage girl: Beauty and Conformity, or The Belief that to be Beautiful, You have to Look like Everyone Else.
I conducted an experiment that went as such: For a week, I would dress to emulate alternative subcultures, and for another, adopt the mainstream fashion. During these weeks, I would film reactions and conduct interviews. Once the experiment was over, I would put the footage together and create a documentary.
